Stadler Pankow GmbH

www.stadlerrail.com/de/

International rail vehicle construction company, Stadler, is headquartered in Bussnang in Eastern Switzerland. Founded in 1942, it has a workforce of over 7,600 based in various production, service and engineering locations across Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Belarus and the United States. Service locations are also being operated in countries including Algeria, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the UK. Stadler provides a comprehensive range of products in the heavy and urban transport segments: high-speed trains, intercity trains, regional and commuter heavy rail trains, underground trains, tram trains and trams. Stadler also manufactures main-line locomotives, shunting locomotives and passenger carriages, including the most powerful diesel-electric locomotive in Europe. It is the world’s leading manufacturer in the rack-and-pinion rail vehicle industry.

The Technical Tour starts with a quick introduction of Stadler and a presentation of an engineering project. Afterwards, we’ll first visit our partner in education ABB before we’ll have a look into our production. At the end, there will be a conclusion with the opportunity of a question round.

Rolls-Royce Deutschland

www.rolls-royce.com/country-sites/deutschland.aspx

Rolls-Royce pioneers cutting-edge technologies that deliver the cleanest, safest and most competitive solutions to our planet’s vital power needs. With about 10,000 employees in over a dozen different locations in Germany, the Group has a larger workforce there than in any other country outside the United Kingdom.

Since 1990 Rolls-Royce Deutschland (originally as the joint venture BMW Rolls-Royce) has its own sites and is actively involved in the aerospace industry. Rolls-Royce Deutschland is the only aircraft engine manufacturer in Germany licensed to develop, manufacture and maintain modern civil and military engines.

A total of € 3.6 billion have been invested in development programmes and the associated infrastructure at Rolls-Royce Deutschland since the company was established (as of 01/2018).

The Dahlewitz site, south of Berlin, was opened in 1993, and today employs around 2,800 employees. The BR700 engine family is assembled on site, providing propulsion for large business aircraft. More than 7,000 engines have so far been shipped from the site. The BR725 – the latest member of the BR700 family – powers the award winning Gulfstream G650 that has won the 2014 Collier Trophy and as of May 2018 the latest generation of two-shaft engines has been released with the Pearl 15 for Bombardier’s Global 5500 and 6500 aircraft.

Since 2014 the site operates a test bed for large civil engines, which makes the site capable not only to be involved in the design and development of civil large engines but also in testing the largest and most powerful engines of the Trent family in Germany. This strategic investment marked the step towards the assembly of Trent XWB engines for the Airbus A350 that has begun in mid-2017, supporting the main line in Derby, UK. Additionally a module assembly line has been installed in 2018.

The latest investment has set Dahlewitz to become the centre of excellence to design, build and test the Power Gearbox for the next generation UltraFan®. On 4th September 2017, the Power Gearbox Team successfully tested the first test vehicle reaching 70.000 hp and with that setting an aerospace record.

The tour will offer a chance to explore the Dahlewitz site:

  • Power Gearbox test facility
  • BR700 and Trent XWB assembly lines
  • Aero engine test facilities

It will also cover aspects of Industry 4.0.

Rolls-Royce Deutschland (RRD) has been working successfully with digital tools for many years, particularly when it comes to engine design, simulation and service. The company works with external partners such as the four German university technology centres (UTCs), the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam and smaller start-up companies such as QIO.

Depending on availability the tour could cover:

  • The CAVE (Computational Automatic Virtual Reality): With the help of BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, Rolls-Royce in Dahlewitz has developed an immersive virtual reality system in which engines and components can be displayed in 3D on the basis of the design data (CAVE). Engineers can thus quickly grasp even complex designs and assess modifications.
  • Machine-assisted visual inspections during assembly: The system enables fitters to compare the engine they have physically assembled with a 3D data model using augmented reality technology and immediately spot any discrepancies.
  • Aircraft Availability Centre: Our Aircraft Availability Centre (AAC) for Business Aviation coordinates the authorised service centre network, the global spare part support system and contact to end customers. The teams use cloud-based IT tools, apps and system connections to aircraft manufacturers and IT partners.
