New Academic Equivalency Agreement: QMUL

New Academic Equivalency Agreement with Queen Mary University of London

San Diego, CA, USA (August 2024) The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) is excited to announce that Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) has courses recognized as equivalent to the certification knowledge exam for Associate Systems Engineering Professional (ASEP) and Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) certification.

Students who do well in university courses that have been assessed to have Academic Equivalence (AcEq) are allowed to bypass the certification knowledge exam when applying for ASEP and CSEP Certification. The assessments they complete through their coursework have been recognized by the INCOSE Certification Program as an equivalent alternative to the standardized test developed by INCOSE.

QMUL is the first university to be recognized with AcEq in Europe and the second university outside of the United States. The QMUL program places a strong emphasis not only on technical contents, but also on cross-disciplinary skills vital for an engineer to be effective in the workplace and within the systems engineering field.

Dr Mohammad Hassannezhad, acting Point of Contact for this program and former Program Director for Systems Engineering Degree Apprenticeship MSc at the School of Engineering and Material Science at QMUL, said “We are delighted to see QMUL has become the first university in Europe with an approved Academic Equivalency course. This will not only endorse the alignment of our Systems Engineering offerings with INCOSE standards, but it will also provide our engineering students, coming from a variety of backgrounds, with a unique educational experience and competitive advantage to complement their engineering degrees with an internationally recognized ASEP or CSEP certification.”

Courtney Wright, INCOSE Certification Program Manager, said, “INCOSE is happy to recognize the QMUL systems engineering course as an educator of top-notch systems engineers. Academic Equivalency provides an alternative method for systems engineers to bypass the knowledge exam portion of the certification requirements, and we are glad to see QMUL bring this option to Europe.”

Academic members of INCOSE’s Corporate Advisory Board are eligible to offer Academic Equivalency upon recognition by the INCOSE Certification Program. Candidates who apply through AcEq must still meet all other INCOSE certification requirements, including individual membership and payment of application fees.

About the International Council on Systems Engineering: The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) is a not-for-profit membership organization that promotes international collaboration in systems engineering practice, education, and research. INCOSE’s mission is to “address complex societal and technical challenges by enabling, promoting, and advancing systems engineering and systems approaches.” Founded in 1990, INCOSE has over 65 chapters and over 23,000 members and associates worldwide. For additional information about INCOSE, visit www.incose.org.

About the INCOSE Systems Engineering Professional Certification: Certification is a formal process whereby a community of knowledgeable, experienced, and skilled representatives of an organization, such as INCOSE, confirms an individual's competency (demonstrated knowledge, education, and experience) in a specified profession. Certification differs from licensing in that licenses are permissions granted by a government entity for a person to practice within its regulatory boundaries. Certification also differs from a "certificate" that documents the successful completion of a training or education program.
