Guide to SysML Model of a "Smart Parking Lot" Reference Architecture is Published

SAN DIEGO (November 2023) – The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) and the Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Working Group of the INCOSE India Chapter are pleased to announce the launch of this publication.

The Guide to SysML Model of a “Smart Parking Lot” Reference Architecture intends to provide an example of representing the architecture of a system using Systems Modeling Language (SysML). The “Smart Parking Lot” system is chosen as a system that most readers would be able to understand and relate to. This example does not involve considerations that are specific to technical domains (such as defense / aerospace / automotive/ control systems/etc.), for which other example models are available. This document describes the various views defined in the model, included with the guide, and provides commentary on the development of these views.

This guide has been written by Nikhil Joshi, Mudit Mittal, Subodh Sadachar, Subarna S, Ankita Jawale, Pradip Salunkhe, Akshay Vidap, Jyothi Patlola, Yatin Jayawant, and Shanu Mishra. The guide covers the following sections:
1. Context for the Smart Parking Lot
2. Architecture for the Smart Parking Lot
3. Evaluating properties and characteristics of the architecture
4. Deriving requirements for the system and subsystems
5. Stakeholder views

Nikhil Joshi, MBSE Local Working Group Lead said, “This publication offers a firsthand example of using Systems Modeling Language (SysML) to develop the architecture of a 'Smart Parking Lot' system. The familiarity of this system ensures accessibility to all readers, regardless of their technical backgrounds. Join us on this journey to enhance your system modeling skills and transform your perception of architecture.”

The Guide to SysML Model of a “Smart Parking Lot” Reference Architecture is available to download free of charge from www.incose.org/smartparkinglot or in the INCOSE Online Store.
