INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL ON SYSTEMS ENGINEERING

A better world through a systems approach.

The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) is a not-for-profit membership organization founded to develop and disseminate the transdisciplinary principles and practices that enable the realization of successful systems. INCOSE is designed to connect systems engineering professionals with educational, networking, and career-advancement opportunities in the interest of developing the global community of systems engineers and systems approaches to problems. We are also focused on producing state-of-the-art work products that support and enhance this discipline’s visibility in the world.

INCOSE Releases SE Handbook v3

Jul 8, 2006, 00:00 AM by INCOSE UMS
Version 3 of the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook represents a shift in paradigm toward global industry application consistent with the Systems Engineering Vision. Developed for the new systems engineer, the engineer in another discipline who needs to perform systems engineering or the experienced systems engineer who needs a convenient reference, the handbook provides an updated description of the key process activities performed by systems engineers. Members who have renewed for the 2006/2007 member year may download the handbook free of charge from the product area on INCOSE Connect (personalized Connect account information will be provided by email by 15 July). Hardcopies of the handbook are also available for purchase from the INCOSE Office.

The descriptions in this handbook show what each systems engineering process activity entails, in the context of designing for affordability and performance. On some projects, a given activity may be performed very informally (e.g., on the back of an envelope, or in an engineer’s notebook); on other projects, very formally, with interim products under formal configuration control. This document is not intended to advocate any level of formality as necessary or appropriate in all situations.

Under the leadership of the INCOSE Product Asset Library (IPAL) working group, on-line appendices will be developed to elaborate on significant topics. The addition of these on-line descriptions, work sheets, checklists, and how-to guides will evolve over time. We look forward to the contributions of INCOSE members, working groups, and Corporate Advisory Board to IPAL as we develop a valuable complement to the SE Handbook.
