Explore the Resilience of Complex Systems in the April 2025 INSIGHT Magazine!

The April 2025 issue of INSIGHT, the systems engineering practitioners’ magazine, is out now! This issue is themed on the crucial topic of Resilience of Complex Systems.

As the imperative to address ‘resilience’ becomes an increasing priority for the future of systems engineering (FuSE) and a key result in the INCOSE Strategic Plan, this issue of INSIGHT offers timely and informative articles to advance your understanding and practice.

INCOSE Technical Operations' recent chartering of the loss-driven systems engineering project highlights the importance of integrating loss-driven quality characteristics, including security, safety, and resilience. This issue demonstrates that resilience is a well-established area within systems engineering, with a substantial body of work to build upon.

 Some article highlights include:

 • “A Generic State-Machine Model of System Resilience” by Scott Jackson, Stephen Cook, and Timothy Ferris. This foundational article explores the essential states a system navigates from operational status through restoration or decommissioning, outlining 7 defined states and 28 transitions.

 • “An SoS Analytical Workbench Approach to Architectural Analysis and Evolution” by Daniel DeLaurentis et al. (awarded best paper in 2016 from the October 2016 systems of systems themed issue). Discover a workbench of computational tools designed to facilitate better-informed decision-making for evolving System of Systems architectures.

 • “How Infrastructure Can Become Reborn by Becoming Born Robust” by Josh Sparber. Learn how risk-based profiles can be used to build infrastructure resilient to electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) within a micro-grid.

 • “Effective and Efficient Preparation for the Unforeseeable” by Steve Hinsley, Michael Henshaw, and Carys Siemieniuch. This article addresses the challenge of maintaining a System of Systems' fitness for purpose in the face of unpredictable changes.

 • “Bringing Operational Perspectives into the Analysis of Engineered Resilient Systems” by Valerie Sitterle et al. Explore the evaluation of early-stage design alternatives through the lens of modeled operational performance and characteristics.

 And more!

INCOSE members receive complimentary access to INSIGHT as a benefit of their membership. We encourage you to explore this insightful issue and share it with your colleagues.

 Enjoy!
