INCOSE Chicagoland Chapter: February Meeting - Things Break, Don't They? A practical introduction to availability modeling for assessing architecture

Abstract Systems critical to the mission of first responders need to be fully operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When creating an architecture for such a system, it is essential to ensure the architecture provides the necessary operational availability. Assessing architecture alternatives using predictive availability models early in the system lifecycle helps to identify weaknesses in the architecture which can be corrected or mitigated before the system is deployed. The outcome is a system worthy of the label “mission critical”. About our Speaker Jim Streed has over 35 years of experience developing mission critical communications systems for first responders at Motorola and Motorola Solutions. After stints in hardware design and digital signal processing software, he has spent the last 25 years in a systems engineering role. Jim uses modeling and simulation, statistical data analysis, and other Design for Six Sigma tools and techniques to identify high quality, customer-centric, cost-effective design decisions. Jim's areas of expertise include audio quality, traffic engineering, and availability analysis. Being an INCOSE member, he is also valued at Motorola Solutions as a systems engineering process pragmatist. Jim earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from University of Illinois and a MS in Electrical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology. He is certified as a Design for Six Sigma Black Belt. Jim has been a member of INCOSE since 2005.
