ABSTRACT: The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is NASA's flagship space astrophysics mission, designed and built to see the furthest visible objects in the Universe. This lecture will discuss the main science themes for JWST and the flow into mission requirements and design. Emphasis will be given to the main engineering challenges and the elements of the JWST Observatory. Examples of solutions to archetypal, interdisciplinary JWST design problems will be shown. The presentation will conclude with the current status of the hardware and remaining tasks prior to launch in October of 2018.

BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Jonathan Arenberg, Chief Engineer, James Webb Space Telescope, Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems

Jonathan Arenberg has been with Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems since 1989 having started his career with Hughes Aircraft Company. His work experience includes optical, space and laser systems. Dr. Arenberg has worked on such astronomical programs as the Chandra X-ray Observatory, James Webb Space Telescope and helped conceive and develop the Starshade concept for the direct imaging of extra-solar planets. He has worked on major high-energy and tactical laser systems, laser component engineering, metrology and optical inspection issues. He is a member of the US National and International (ISO) sub-committees charged with writing standards for laser and electro-optic systems and components, SPIE, American Astronomical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, AIAA and Sigma Xi. Dr. Arenberg holds a BS in physics and an MS and PhD in engineering, all from the University of California, Los Angeles. He is the author of over 140 conference presentations, papers and book chapters. He holds 1 European and 11 U.S. Patents in a wide variety of areas of technology and is currently the Chief Engineer for the James Webb Space Telescope Program at Northrop Grumman and an SPIE Fellow.

- The next screen will provide you with phone numbers and audio code. You can use those info to call in or you can have the system to call you.
- Give you an IP address that you can dial with your room system, and then you must provide the pairing code displayed on your room system to Bluejeans and follow the steps.
Blue Jeans also have Android and iOS apps. If somebody wants to use those apps, all they need is to download the app and then enter the meeting info to join.
