Abstract
In 2015, McKinsey and Company estimated the value created by the Internet of Things would be between $4 Trillion and $11 Trillion by 2025. Until now, only a small fraction has been realized. We discuss how we can unlock that value using Digital Twin Technologies (e.g., PLM, AI, IoT, Real-time Systems Analytics) and their impact on engineering, productivity, responsiveness, and supply chain resiliency. We will discuss the five grand challenges in Digital Twins and Resilient Supply Chains and how we are responding at Purdue through a new Purdue Initiative in Manufacturing and Operations spanning five colleges (Business, Engineering, Agriculture, Science, and Polytechnic) and our national efforts in branding Purdue Manufacturing & Operations. We explore why Small and Medium Manufactures (SMMs) play such a critical role, what future research is required, and how a carefully constructed manufacturing innovation ecosystem could enable SMMs to flourish unlocking vast value for small and large manufacturers. Stephan Biller is the Harold T. Amrine Distinguished Professor in the School of Industrial Engineering and the Daniels School of Business at Purdue University. He is the co-founder of the national Excellence in Manufacturing and Operations initiative and leads Purdue’s Dauch Center for Management of Manufacturing Enterprises. Previously, he served as Founder and CEO of Advanced Manufacturing International, Vice President of Product Management for AI Applications & Watson IoT at IBM, Chief Manufacturing Scientist & Manufacturing Technology Director at General Electric, and Tech Fellow & Global Group Manager for Manufacturing Systems at General Motors. He is an IEEE Fellow and an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering.
