Abstract
Many of today’s complex weapon systems are represented as models using Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools and methodologies. Several MBSE languages and frameworks exist for this purpose, including the System Modeling Language (SysML) and the Unified Architecture Framework (UAF). Much of the focus of a system model is on its required behavior – what the system does, and its structure – system components and interfaces, all derived from specified operational needs. Several UAF diagram types are dedicated to the graphical representation and illustration of a system’s required behavior and structure across multiple domains which include the Operational Domain and the Resources Domain. This presentation provides a brief introduction to MBSE, UAF and its underlying metamodel, and then provides practical examples of these diagrams based on a notional system model developed using UAF.

Biography
Keith Zook
is a Principal Model Based Systems Engineer at Intuitive Research and Technology Corporation. INTUITIVE is headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama, and is an award-winning aerospace engineering and analysis firm. As a MBSE practitioner for over 20 years, preceded by several years of classical Systems Engineering, Keith has been able to provide a practical results-oriented approach to MBSE applications as he effectively leads various projects and mentors personnel. He currently serves as the lead MBSE in support of the Army Aviation Assistant PEO Engineering and Architecture (APEO E&A) for the development of an Enterprise Product Architecture in support of achieving Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) objectives. He also currently leads several MBSE projects in support of the Eglin Gulf Test and Training Range (EGTTR). Keith has successfully applied MBSE in many technical domains and in support of several organizations which include Army Aviation, Army Tactical Missiles, Army Missiles and Space, Navy Strategic Defense, Missile Defense Agency, Air Force Research Lab, Air Force EGTTR, and NASA. Keith has effectively used several MBSE tools over the span of his career which include RDD-100, Core, Cradle, Rhapsody, and Cameo Enterprise Architecture. He earned a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Geneva College in 1982. He holds the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification since 2006 and the INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) certification since 2010. He also holds the Open Management Group Certified Systems Modeling Professional (OCSMP) Model User and Model Builder Fundamental certifications. Keith currently resides in the rural Huntsville area with his wife, Terri, where he has just concluded the beekeeping/honey and you-pick blueberry orchard that he established in 2014 as they prepare to move to Navarre, FL in the spring 2024 timeframe. (No, they are not retiring…yet!)
