Presentation by “Ike” Eisenhauer:

Stop "Problem Solving" and Start "Systems Planning":
Avoiding the Specter of Unintended Consequences

Brief:
Unintended consequences of problem solving, caused by myopic perspectives, knee jerk reactions, and antiphonal replies, all stem from a lack of true systems thinking view point. As systems engineers, we have (or should have) a voice of reason and experience in the complex thinking involved in understanding large scale systems and help in the planning process, thus ensuring the solution is not worse than the problem. This presentation hopefully will provide some insights and guidelines on how to approach and discuss this change of perspective and goal with decision makers not necessarily familiar with the systems thinking approach.

Our Presenter:
William "ike" Eisenhauer, is the co-owner of MindField Escapes in Lake Oswego, Oregon. He also is an adjunct associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at both Portland State University and Portland Community College. He holds a B.S.M.E. and a master’s degree in Systems Engineering. Ike was the Executive Director of the Office of Systems Reliability and Consultation for the Veterans Health Administration, where he served as an expert on the Healthcare System Engineering Workgroup of President Obama's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. He also is an industry consultant in the areas of healthcare systems engineering, risk and uncertainty management, executive decision-making, and benchmarking.
