The Art and Practice of Systems Engineering: For students considering or enrolled in a technical curriculum, technical professionals, systems engineers, project and or program managers
Topic: This presentation will discuss the relationship between the Art & Science of Systems Engineering. This relationship begins with the acquisition of knowledge (the Science) that is integral through the many forms of formal education and training. The Art of systems engineering is an innate characteristic that builds upon our formal acquisition of knowledge but is a result of our intangible abilities to reason and apply systems thinking to solve complex problems.
In addition, whether we are just beginning our journey in the systems engineering profession or established as a subject mater expert, INCOSE is a critical asset to every systems engineering professional. INCOSE provides systems engineers with a bridge to other subject matter experts as well as provides access to a process through peer acceptance in becoming a certified expert professional.
Following the presentation, several systems engineering experts will share their experiences and perspectives on a panel, and answer questions from the audience.

About the Speaker: Mr. Joe Stevens has worked for more than 30 years in the avionics and ground vehicle industries in various engineering and program management positions dealing with some of the most complex systems. His educational background is in electrical engineering and systems architecting & engineering but during his career he has worked on numerous research and development programs spanning the avionics and ground vehicle life cycle management spectrum from remote ground vehicle robotic systems to some of the world’s most advanced airborne radar, space-based telecommunications and ground based mutli-sensor fusion systems in use today.
Mr. Stevens has a keen interest in the elegant, cost effective and efficient development of complex systems and has worked with large OEM’s, tier 1 suppliers and as a consultant to the DoD in identifying and successfully implementing ways to manage cost, schedule and performance objectives. His goal is to present the many personal lessons learned in roles as a systems engineer and program manager from a perspective that can empower young engineers to enter the work force with the necessary awareness to guide their path as systems engineers, technical leaders and entrepreneurs. In addition, for existing systems engineers or technical professionals, Mr. Stevens also recognizes the responsibility they are likely to encounter with self-managing their career development and offers guidance such as creating network interactions, referring to publications and earning certifications that organizations such as INCOSE offers.
Mr. Stevens has earned degrees in a Master of Science for Systems Architecting and Engineering from The University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA, a Bachelor of Science for Electrical Engineering from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA, a Bachelor of Science for Electronic Engineering Technology and an Associate of Science for Electronic Engineering Technology from The University of Akron.
