ABSTRACTSystems engineering in the 21st century is being driven by hyper-connectivity, increasing system complexity, convergence, and increasing use in non-traditional domains. Today the field is in the midst of a transformation fueled by advances in technology, emphasis on transdisciplinarity, and inroads being made in the development of an underlying theory of systems engineering. This talk presents trends in systems engineering and systems engineering education, opportunities in industry and academia, and calls for a new mindset on the part of practitioners and students to exploit these opportunities.

BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Azad Madni is a Professor of Astronautical Engineering and the Director of Systems Architecting and Engineering Program at USC. He also has joint appointments in the Schools of Medicine and Education. He serves on USC’s Council of the Cyber-Physical Systems and IoT Center, and is a member of Center for Interdisciplinary Decisions and Ethics (DECIDE). He is the founder and CEO of Intelligent Systems Technology Inc., a high-tech R&D company specializing in intelligent systems for education, training and performance support. He received his BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Engineering from UCLA. He is a graduate of the Stanford Executive Institute for senior executives.

He has received several prestigious awards and honors from the U.S. Government, aerospace, professional societies, and the commercial sector. Some of his recent awards include: 2016 Lifetime Accomplishments Award and Visionary Systems Engineering Leadership Award from the Boeing Company during its 100thanniversary; 2016 INCOSE RMC Award for pioneering advances in Transdisciplinary Systems Engineering;  2016 Distinguished Engineering Educator Award from the Engineers’ Council; 2016 Outstanding Educator Award from the Orange County Engineering Council; 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award from INCOSE and INCOSE-LA; 2012 Exceptional Achievement Award from INCOSE-LA; 2011 Pioneer Award from the International Council of Systems Engineering. He is a Life Fellow of IEEE, IETE, and SDPS, and a Fellow of AAAS, AIAA, and INCOSE. He has over 350 journal and peer-reviewed conference publications. He is the co-author (with T. Bahill) of a textbook entitled, “Trade-off Decisions in Systems Design” (Springer, 2016). He is the author of a forthcoming book entitled, “Transdisciplinary Systems Engineering: Exploiting Convergence in a Hyper-Connected World” (Springer, 2017). He is the Co-Editor-in-Chief of “Engineered Resilient Systems: Challenges and Opportunities in the 21st Century” (Elseveier Procedia Computer Science, 2014). He is listed in the major Who’s Who, including Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in Industry and Finance, and Who’s Who in America.
