Abstract:
Agile Management and U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) acquisition are typically not used in the same sentence unless someone is expressing frustration.  For those familiar with DoD acquisition, you already realize it is a very process-oriented endeavor with well-defined gates and little room for deviation from a predefined notion of progress.  The DoD is making efforts to embrace and promote agile methods but, these efforts are still not being felt on a large scale.  This presentation will provide some background on the oil-and-water nature of Agile Methods and DoD acquisition, a sampling of popular agile methods, and ultimately lessons learned for emulsifying those ingredients into a homogeneous mixture of project success.  Even if the overall project cannot be managed using Agile Methods, some of the information in this presentation may help systems engineers to embrace the iterative nature of the ISO/IEC 15288 process to leverage Agile Methods that will increase efficiency, mitigate risk, and contribute to project success.
