Abstract:
The aviation industry has a multi-dimensional effect on the global economy. Some examples of these effects include, role of industry in global trade; the large number of people who are either working directly or indirectly in the industry; the amount of energy that is being used by the industry, the number of people who are traveling by air for leisure and/or business; the environmental impact (noise, pollution, etc.) of the industry; and the safety and security impact on the global scale. The Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA’s) Next Generation (NextGen) program is a collection of research activities with the overall goal of improving operation. Over the past five years, the Next generation Applied Research (NEAR) laboratory, has been involved on number of NextGen projects. This talk briefly describes the goals of the FAA’s NextGen program, followed by an overview of the NEAR lab, and recent projects that have been conducted in support of the NextGen program.
Presenter:
Massood Towhidnejad is Director of NextGen Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) Applied Research (NEAR) laboratory, and Professor of Software Engineering at ERAU. In addition to his university position, he has served as Visiting Research Associate at the FAA, Faculty Fellow at NASA Goddard Flight Research Center, and Software Quality Assurance Manager at Carrier Corporations. His research interest includes; software engineering, software quality assurance and testing, autonomous systems, and Air Traffic Management (NextGen). He has collaborated with various government agencies (i.e., NASA, FAA, and NOAA) and industries.
