Abstract:
During the past 25 years I’ve had the pleasure of working with more than 5,000 engineers and development PMs worldwide. In candid conversation, these professionals share that their ability to do great work is now limited primarily by the management culture they report to, not a lack of skills or tools.
Older individuals remember a time when this was not true, younger ones have trouble even imagining a world where engineers are allowed to do their job well. How can this be true, and why are things getting worse rather than better?
Development professionals are required to follow processes that do not honor the nature of developmental work. They struggle to obtain even minimal budget and schedule allocations, almost none are adequately resourced to excel at their assigned tasks. They are measured by rules that view every cost as a failure but are blind to the benefit those costs generate.
Engineers are tied down in ways that destroy our ability to contribute, work counter to the goals of the organizations we support, and deny the world access to a type of brilliance it desperately needs. The good news is that all of these limits are artificial, and all can be removed with proper communication and genuine understanding.
