Abstract:
This presentation will describe initial knowledge claims by the Unified Ontology project as recently initiated by INCOSE's new Systems Science Working Group in association with the International Society for the System Sciences. It will summarize the material reviewed in the System Sciences Working Group session at IS11, Denver. This webinar will enable feedback and guidance from the BoD and other INCOSE offices and members.
The project is an expedition toward formulating a formal ontology that unifies the language of science (particularly scientific method), systems (including all kinds, of which there may be upwards of 85 kinds) and of particular kinds of systems that accomplish systems engineering and engineering of systems. The knowledge claims will be presented in the form of concept maps that show a network of propositions or syllogisms. This level of material is intended to enable the formulation of formal ontologies that, in turn, enable computer-aided composition of systems and real-time assessment of system and system of systems viability.
Bio:
Jack Ring became involved in systems test in 1957 and systems engineering in 1959 and has applied both in aerospace, industrial, commercial and public service domains. With GE, Honeywell, Edelbrock, Ascent Logic, and IBM he has devised more than 50 systems. Most of these contained humans as active entities and outperformed stakeholder expectations. He joined INCOSE in 1991, was named Fellow in 2003 and has contributed numerous papers, panels in tutorials as well as co-chairing the Intelligent Enterprises WG, 2002 – 2007 and, currently, the Motor Sports WG and Autonomous Systems Test and Evaluation WG. He is cofounder and active in Kennen Technologies LLC to commercialize semantic technologies, OntoPilot LLC to foster knowledge exchange and choice making and Educe LLC to accelerate youth education. He earned a BA, Physics, Emporia State U., Kansas, and continues formal education and action research in systems, innovation and management.
