Abstract:
The Body of Knowledge and Curriculum to Advance Systems Engineering (BKCASE) Project is a global initiative to establish the authoritative systems engineering body of knowledge (SEBoK) and graduate reference curriculum for systems engineering (GRCSE). The BKCASE project is led by the Stevens Institute of Technology and the Naval Postgraduate School with sponsorship from the U.S. Department of Defense and support from INCOSE, the IEEE Computer Society, and several other professional organizations. Both SEBoK and GRCSE are being produced in 3 major releases culminating in version 1.0 publication in late 2012. A team of 50 authors from academia, industry, and government released version 0.25 in September 2010 for limited review by more than 200 experts from around the world. GRCSE 0.25 will be released in mid-December for a similar review. If successful, BKCASE products will influence the global community's understanding of systems engineering and help guide the evolution of competency models, professional certification approaches, educational models, and more. This talk will describe the goals, strategy, and status of both SEBoK and GRCSE and share the team's plans for upcoming activities.
Bio:
Arthur Pyster is a Distinguished Research Professor in the School of Systems and Enterprises at Stevens Institute of Technology and the Deputy Executive Director of the Systems Engineering Research Center, a Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Center. Before joining Stevens in March 2007, he served as the Senior Vice President and Director of Systems Engineering and Integration for SAIC. Earlier, he served as the Deputy Chief Information Officer for the Federal Aviation Administration and held several other executive, management, and technical roles in systems and software engineering. Dr Pyster is an INCOSE Fellow and is currently the INCOSE Director for Academic Matters. During 2008-2009, Dr. Pyster was the Chairman of the INCOSE Corporate Advisory Board. He has a PhD in computer and information sciences from Ohio State University. His recent research interests include improving the systems and software engineering workforce and integrating the systems and software engineering disciplines. He recently completed an international project that created GSwE2009: Curriculum Guidelines for Graduate Degree Programs in Software Engineering. Those guidelines have been adopted by both the IEEE Computer Society and the Association for Computing Machinery. He now leads the Body of Knowledge and Curriculum to Advance Systems Engineering (BKCASE) Project, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense with support from INCOSE, the IEEE Computer Society, and other professional organizations.
