The Pentagon has a rich history separate and apart to being the Department of Defense headquarters. Authorized by Congress in 1941, the building was used and abused over the next 50 years. A Pentagon Renovation Program began in 1996 to completely restore and renew the building. September 11, 2001 interrupted the Program but created Operation Phoenix. Phoenix rebuilt the 9/11 damage within one year. We will discuss the Pentagon and Operation Phoenix and a firsthand description of the September 11th attack.
About the speaker: Arthur H. Hildebrandt
Building on a Jesuit education (St. Ignatius High School (1964) and Georgetown University (1968, B.A. in economics)), Art received his J.D. degree in 1974 from The Cleveland State University, John Marshall College of Law. After serving in Vietnam and attending law school, he began a 30 year legal career in the Office of General Counsel, Navy. He started in the Naval Supply Systems Command, first in Headquarters and then at the Washington, D.C., Naval Regional Contracting Office. In 1976, he transferred to the Naval Air Systems Command. Mr. Hildebrandt provided legal advice on a variety of programs including the F/A 18-Strike Fighter and Harpoon missile programs. In 1992, he was appointed Associate General Counsel (Litigation)/ Director, Navy Litigation Office. This office is responsible for defending the Navy's interest in the most significant cases involving government contract, civilian personnel, and environmental law.
