We all recognize that SE is a technically demanding field, and a huge contributor to development success in a complex world. We spend far less time as a community discussing the impact that our role has on us. To protect the users of a system, we are forced to imagine a multitude of horrible things that might happen and then work diligently to prevent them. It’s not the same as experiencing the trauma, but it does come with a cost. Even if you fully block the consequences through technical skill, your mind will always remember the underlying risk and wonder what you might have missed. Organizations multiply our stress when they are averse to accepting the costs / responsibilities that logically follow from our awareness. We’ll explore the origins of this unique type of stress, talk about what the SE community can do to protect ourselves, and discuss strategies for effectively communicating needed urgency to others.
