The workshop is built around a hands-on exercise in which you will develop a model of a system to provide electricity to an off-grid site. Using a full-featured systems engineering tool, you will a follow an instructor-led top-down process to capture and create systems engineering information about the off-grid power system in a database system model. This will give you a real-world design experience in actually creating your own system model like those that would actually be used to realize the power system.

In the course of the workshop exercise you will be exposed to the critical aspects of MBSE including:

  • Requirements Elicitation and Capture
  • System Structural Context Definition
  • System Behavioral Context Definition
  • Detailing System Behavior
  • Architecting Systems Based on Behavior
  • Simulation of Behavior
  • Parameterization for Analysis

Upon completion of the workshop, you will have an understanding of the MBSE experience and the power of a real systems engineering tool to bring your design ideas to life in a true systems model.

Attendees will be provided an evaluation license of Vitech’s GENESYS MBSE tool and presentation materials 1 week prior to the workshop. Installation of the provided GENESYS software and the included GENESYS Excel connector are required prior to the workshop.

A set of links for internet sites that contain some reference information will be included in the initial information. The experience will be much more dynamic if the attendees review these links and do a little further research in 2 areas.

  1. Common household electrical devices and the power/current demands for these devices.  (This will aid in our definition of the problem space.)
  2. Existing electrical generation systems. (This will give us more knowledge of the solution space in which to design.)

Steve is a Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) through the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE). Steve has spent 25+ years developing his systems engineering skills through experiential learning. While his experience is broad, he has spent the majority of that time in the automotive sector supporting the development of engine controls, transmission controls, suspension controls, and lithium-ion batteries. His roles over the years have ranged from electrical engineer to project lead to subject matter expert to manager. Steve holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Marquette University. He is also a graduate of the INCOSE Institute for Technical Leadership.
