Big-Data and Big-Simulation: Modeling Stochastic Dynamics for the Next Generation of Air Traffic Systems
With the reemergence of machine-learning techniques and the FAA’s open data system (SWIM), engineers now have the opportunity to build next generation air traffic systems using big-data techniques. This opportunity comes as the FAA is halting the allowance of in-field prototyping. As such, the combined use of big-data and big-simulation is becoming increasingly important when designing, verifying, and validating the safety and performance of next generation systems. This talk will cover two recent efforts that used big-data and big-simulation: (1) the development of an aircraft collision avoidance system (ACAS-X); and (2) a benefit analysis of runway balancing as part of the Terminal Flight Data Manager (TFDM). The talk will conclude with a discussion on how the same big-data methodology is being applied in the areas of UAVs, education, military logistics, and taxi demand modeling.

Dr. Adan Vela
About the Speaker: Dr. Adan Vela is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems at the University of Central Florida. Previous to UCF, Dr. Vela served as Technical Staff at MIT Lincoln Lab. His primary research interest involves the modeling and simulation of stochastic dynamic processes through the use of big-data. More importantly, his work seeks to exploit big-data models to improve system performance through optimization and predictive analytics. His previous research efforts include aircraft blunder and anomaly detection systems; next-generation collision avoidance systems; safety analysis of NextGen concepts; and agent-based simulations. Of late, Dr. Vela’s research projects have grown to include applying big-data techniques in education, taxi demand modeling, and human-robot teaming.
